Job Description
WWF Tanzania is seeking an experienced and strategic Head of People & Culture to lead the fair, effective, and efficient management of its workforce. The position supports the application of high People & Culture standards, enabling an engaged and capable workforce to deliver the organisation’s Conservation Strategy.
The role provides leadership across human resources strategy, recruitment, employee development, performance management, compensation and benefits, compliance, occupational health and safety, workforce reporting, and organisational development. The successful candidate will report to the Country Director and supervise the People & Culture Officer.

Mission of the Department
The People & Culture Department ensures that WWF Tanzania applies high standards of People & Culture management to maintain a skilled, engaged, and high-performing workforce capable of delivering the organisation’s Conservation Strategy.
Major Functions
- Ensure human resources within the WWF Tanzania Country Office are managed fairly, effectively, and efficiently.
- Provide People & Culture advice and collaborate with Tanzania Country Office staff.
- Establish and implement effective human resources structures, policies, processes, and management systems.
- Ensure compliance with Tanzania’s legal requirements and adherence to WWF human resources policies, procedures, and standards.
Key Responsibilities
People & Culture Strategy and Governance
- Implement the People & Culture component of the Tanzania Country Office Strategic Plan.
- Ensure People & Culture best practices are available and applied across the organisation.
- Establish and maintain effective organisational structures, policies, and human resources processes.
- Ensure personnel contracts comply with WWF requirements, Tanzanian standards, and applicable labour laws.
- Ensure the correct application of WWF Tanzania policies relating to personnel behaviour and compliance.
Recruitment and Employee Lifecycle Management
- Manage recruitment, induction, performance appraisals, contract compliance, contract renewals, and employee exits.
- Ensure personnel contracts are fair and compliant.
- Support appropriate training and employee capacity-building activities.
- Participate, where appropriate, in the hiring, development, and evaluation of Tanzania Country Office staff.
Performance and Capability Development
- Analyse performance management results.
- Develop and implement performance improvement plans.
- Develop and implement staff capacity-building plans.
- Ensure appropriate training and professional development of personnel.
- Respond to queries concerning performance management systems and related employee matters.
Compensation and Benefits
- Participate in annual remuneration reviews and provide recommendations.
- Develop and maintain a nationwide approach to employee compensation and benefits.
- Respond to employee and management queries concerning working conditions and human resources policies.
Human Resources Data and Reporting
- Ensure standard personnel information is stored appropriately.
- Ensure personnel records are updated promptly and available when required.
- Maintain human resources data and statistics.
- Provide regular reports and analysis to the Country Director to support continuous improvement and management decision-making.
Employee Communication and Advisory Support
- Maintain effective communication with staff on human resources matters affecting employees.
- Respond to requests for information about human resources policies and working conditions.
- Provide advice on performance management and crisis management matters.
- Provide guidance, counselling, and negotiation support across different organisational levels.
Occupational Health and Safety
- Develop and implement the Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Oversee risk management and incident management.
- Support injury management and workers’ compensation.
- Maintain the first aid programme.
- Support employee rehabilitation arrangements where required.
Organisational Development
- Assist the Country Director in structuring the organisation to support delivery of its strategy.
- Work closely with the Country Director and Heads of Departments.
- Coordinate with the WWF International Africa Hub, WWF International, and other WWF offices as appropriate.
Audit and Field Project Support
- Liaise and cooperate with the WWF Internal Auditor on human resources audits and self-audits when required.
- Supervise field projects on human resources issues.
- Conduct regular internal human resources audits at field projects.
- Perform other duties requested by the Country Director.
Required Qualifications
Applicants should have:
- A postgraduate degree in Human Resources Management, Business Management, or another related field.
- A Master of Science in Human Resources Management or Master of Public Administration as an added advantage.
- Membership in a relevant professional body as a strong asset.
- A proven track record in human resources administration and management.
- At least eight years of professional experience in human resources management.
- Knowledge of Tanzania’s institutional, legal, and policy framework governing employment and human resources management.

- Proven human resources administration and management skills.
- Demonstrated experience applying human resources management protocols.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a strong understanding of human relationships.
- Strong guidance, counselling, and negotiation capabilities at all organisational levels.
- Good teamwork skills.
- Excellent spoken and written English communication skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities
The Head of People & Culture will oversee People & Culture matters for all WWF Tanzania employees and supervise the People & Culture Department team. The role will exercise direct daily supervision over personnel assigned to the People & Culture team and will participate, where appropriate, in the hiring, development, and evaluation of Tanzania Country Office staff.

The Head of People & Culture will interact daily with:
- The Country Director.
- Heads of Departments.
- Tanzania Country Office employees.
- Project teams.
- WWF International Africa Hub People & Culture team.
- WWF International and other WWF Network employees.
External Relationships
The role will interact with governmental institutions, non-governmental organisations, donors, and other stakeholders in collaboration with the WWF Tanzania Country Director.
