From Excel User to Operations Analyst: Three Practice Projects You Can Explain

Published October 24, 2026 27 Views

“Advanced Excel” is much stronger when you can open a file and explain a decision it supports.

Project one: an inventory exception report

Create a synthetic stock table with item codes, quantities, reorder levels and last-movement dates. Build a report that highlights items needing attention. Include a short explanation of the rules you chose and the questions a supervisor should investigate.

Do not claim your invented reorder levels are operational recommendations for a real warehouse. The exercise demonstrates structure, checking and communication, not knowledge of a company you have never worked for.

Project two: a delivery-performance review

Use fictional orders with planned and actual delivery dates. Define what counts as on time, identify missing values and show which cases need follow-up. A simple chart is enough if it answers the question clearly.

Add an assumptions box. For example: how did you handle cancelled orders or records with no actual delivery date? An analyst’s value includes noticing where the data is incomplete and avoiding a confident conclusion that the evidence does not support.

Project three: a weekly management summary

Turn either exercise into a one-page summary with the business question, two findings, a limitation and a proposed next investigation. Write it for a busy manager rather than an examiner. Make the workbook and the summary tell the same story.

  • Can another person follow the formulas or steps?
  • Are the labels and date formats consistent?
  • Have you checked totals against the source table?
  • Does each chart have a useful purpose?
  • Can you explain a mistake you found and corrected?

Present the work honestly

Describe the files as independent practice projects using synthetic data. If you later use real workplace material, get appropriate permission and remove confidential information. Do not relabel a classroom exercise as paid employment.

Choose one project, finish it and practise a two-minute explanation: the question, your approach, the result and what you would check next. That conversation can reveal more than listing another software package on your CV.
