A busy application week is not always a focused application week.
Pick a work problem before picking a company
Write one sentence describing the work you are ready to do: reconcile accounts, coordinate deliveries, support customers, maintain equipment or analyse operations. Then select employers whose activities actually need that work. Location, working arrangements and your current experience should narrow the list further.
This is an original planning exercise, not a claim that five applications produce a particular response rate. The point is to replace random activity with choices you can explain.
Build a one-page shortlist
For each of five employers, record the official website, business activity, relevant department, vacancy source and the reason your skills might fit. Add one genuine piece of evidence you can offer: a project, relevant placement or work example.
| Employer check | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Business fit | What does this organisation deliver, and to whom? |
| Role fit | Which advertised responsibilities can I already support? |
| Evidence | What specific example demonstrates that? |
| Practical fit | Can I meet the stated location and application requirements? |
| Next action | Apply, research further, build a missing skill or remove from the list? |
Tailor the application to a real vacancy
Use the employer’s actual responsibilities to decide what belongs near the top of your CV and cover letter. Explain how a relevant example connects to the advertised work. Do not invent a vacancy or send an application to an address you have guessed.
Europass advises connecting particular CV examples to the vacancy in a cover letter. For your Tanzania shortlist, apply that principle using the format and application instructions the employer actually requests.
Review the list every Friday
Record what happened: submitted, acknowledged, screening call, interview or no response yet. Add the next action and date. Replace a poor fit when the evidence changes; do not keep a company simply because its brand is attractive.
By the end of the exercise, you should be able to explain why each application deserves your effort. That is a more useful outcome than collecting another long list of job titles.
