No Job Title Yet? Build a One-Page Evidence Portfolio Before Your Next Graduate Application

Published October 29, 2026 24 Views

“No experience” can hide useful evidence. The answer is to explain that evidence accurately, not invent employment.

Choose one relevant problem

Start with a project, placement, volunteering task or independent practice exercise that relates to a role you want. Describe the problem in plain language. A class project can demonstrate an ability, provided you call it a class project rather than client work.

For example, a graduate interested in administration might show a synthetic meeting-action tracker, while someone interested in procurement might explain a comparison exercise using fictional suppliers. These are illustrative ideas, not substitutes for experience or required professional credentials.

Build the page around four questions

  1. What was the task? Explain the question and setting.
  2. What did you do? Separate your contribution from the team’s work.
  3. What can someone inspect? Include a small screenshot, output or concise method description.
  4. What did you learn? Name a limitation, correction or next improvement.

CareerOneStop includes work samples and accomplishments among the material a career portfolio can present. The one-page format here is an original exercise to make that evidence easier to discuss.

Protect accuracy and permission

Use synthetic data for independent practice. Do not expose a placement employer’s customer details, employee records or internal reports. If you cannot share an artefact, describe the method and learning without publishing the confidential material.

Include the project date, tools and whether the work was individual or collaborative. Avoid impressive but unexplained charts. A reader should be able to understand the page without needing a ten-minute tour.

Connect it to the vacancy

Read the application instructions before attaching an extra file or link. When supporting material is permitted, explain in one sentence why the project is relevant to a stated responsibility. Practise a short account of what you would do differently next time.

The goal is not to claim that a project makes you fully job-ready for every role. It is to give the employer a specific starting point for assessing how you think, work and learn.
