For an African-qualified physiotherapist considering the UK, the first useful question is whether the evidence demonstrates the professional standards required by the Health and Care Professions Council. A well-presented CV can help an employer understand your experience, but HCPC registration requires its own application and assessment.
Keep three decisions separate: professional registration, a genuine employer's recruitment decision and permission to work in the UK. Success in one does not automatically secure the others.
1. Confirm that you are using the correct route
The HCPC international-route criteria cover applicants whose relevant training and qualification were delivered outside the UK and who have not previously been registered with HCPC. UK-trained applicants and former registrants use different routes. Special application provisions may also apply, so check your circumstances before paying.
HCPC registration is required to practise as a physiotherapist in the UK, as explained by GOV.UK. An overseas qualification is assessed; it does not receive automatic acceptance merely because its title includes physiotherapy.
2. Build the evidence before submitting
Start a private document inventory with columns for document, issuing organisation, name consistency, certification, translation and outstanding action. Keep an untouched original copy and a clearly named working copy. Ask the university and professional regulator about their document processes early.
HCPC's course-information guidance explains the qualification certificate and course information form. Follow its instructions for the institution's involvement. A self-written summary of what you remember studying should not replace official course evidence.
Prepare identity and address evidence, qualifications, course information, relevant professional history and declarations as directed by the current application checklist. Check certification and translation rules document by document. Avoid submitting identifiable patient records as evidence of your work.
3. Understand the standards mapping requirement
Since 20 November 2025, international applicants must include a standards-of-proficiency mapping document. The HCPC process announcement says applicants will no longer be invited to add information to address evidence gaps after submission. Gaps may lead to a test of competence; significant gaps may result in refusal.
Use the official mapping guidance and template. Locate the specific evidence for each standard rather than repeating broad claims such as “excellent clinical skills.” References need to help an assessor find the relevant material.
3.1 An original portfolio example
Consider a fictional Tanzanian physiotherapist with hospital and outpatient rehabilitation experience. For a standard relevant to assessment and clinical reasoning, their working inventory might identify an official module description, supervised placement evidence and a verified description of current duties. The applicant would check whether those documents actually demonstrate the standard and point to the relevant pages.
A useful working table has four columns: standard reference; document and page; what the evidence demonstrates; and a remaining gap or clarification to resolve before submission. This is a preparation aid, not a substitute for HCPC's form. Use genuine evidence and write your own account. Do not invent placements, copy another applicant's narrative or submit patient-identifying material.
4. Check English evidence using your primary qualification
HCPC's English-language guidance uses a list of qualifying countries for the qualification that first enabled practice. Tanzania is not on that list. Studying in English alone should not be treated as an automatic exemption.
For physiotherapists using IELTS, the listed threshold is 7.0 overall with no element below 6.5. HCPC accepts specified IELTS routes, TOEFL and profession-specific OET evidence under its published conditions. OET Physiotherapy requires 1400 overall with no element below 300. Certificates must be no more than two years old when the application is received; tests must be taken at an official centre. Check the current provider-specific conditions before booking. Immigration English requirements must be assessed separately.
5. Budget for assessment and possible next steps
The HCPC scrutiny-fee page lists a one-off, non-refundable assessment payment of £678.38. This is not the complete cost of moving to the UK. Budget separately for language testing, document preparation, possible competence assessment, registration, travel and immigration where applicable. Recheck fees before payment.
Do not make irreversible travel or resignation decisions based on an assumed assessment date. Maintain a tracker for submission, payment confirmation and official correspondence. Respond through the authorised process and read any assessment outcome carefully.
6. Prepare for an employer conversation
Once your evidence is organised, create a concise clinical CV that accurately describes scope of practice, settings, responsibilities and professional development. State registration status precisely: preparing an application, application submitted and registered are different claims.
