Job Description
The Embassy of Switzerland in Tanzania is the official representation of Switzerland, supporting diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Tanzania. Its work covers political, economic and financial affairs, legal arrangements, science, education, culture and international cooperation.
The Embassy is seeking a proactive and competent Program Officer – Economist to develop and manage initiatives focused on innovative financing mechanisms, private-sector development and public-private partnerships. The position offers substantial exposure to project leadership, economic analysis, policy advisory work and engagement with government institutions, development partners and private-sector stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
Project Management and Stakeholder Engagement – Approximately 75%
- Independently manage assigned projects under the Swiss Cooperation Programme Tanzania.
- Lead projects focused on impact-linked financing and private-sector development.
- Undertake project planning, procurement, risk assessment, contracting and contract management.
- Monitor project implementation and review relevant project indicators.
- Prepare and analyse operational and financial reports.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with public-sector and private-sector stakeholders.
- Support effective project-cycle management and results-based delivery.
Economic Analysis and Policy Advice – Approximately 15%
- Conduct in-depth analysis of Tanzania’s macroeconomic context and business environment.
- Monitor and report on relevant economic and private-sector developments.
- Provide expert advice on private-sector engagement and economic governance.
- Assess policy developments and their implications for Swiss cooperation activities.
- Support evidence-based decision-making through clear economic analysis.
Global and Multilateral Initiatives – Approximately 10%
- Serve as the Embassy’s contact person for relevant global and multilateral initiatives.
- Coordinate matters involving institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
- Liaise with the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs and other relevant Swiss Government units.
- Facilitate coordination and information exchange on matters relevant to the Embassy.
Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree in Economics, Business Administration or a related field.
- At least seven years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Macroeconomic development
- Business environment
- Economic governance
- Private-sector development
- Relevant experience working with the private sector.
- Ideally, at least five years of professional experience in development cooperation or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated experience in project planning, monitoring and results-based management.
- Strong experience in preparing and analysing operational and financial reports.
- Proven experience in private-sector engagement.
- Practical knowledge of innovative financing mechanisms, including impact-linked finance and public-private partnerships.
Skills and Competencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Kiswahili and English.
- Ability to prepare concise, clear and well-structured reports and articles.
- Proactive, solution-oriented and committed to continuous professional development.
- Strong interpersonal and stakeholder relationship-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and contribute effectively within a team.
- Excellent understanding of Tanzania’s private sector, business environment and macroeconomic context.
- Strong understanding of growth pathways for start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises.
- Knowledge of relevant licensing, regulatory and taxation frameworks.
- Strong analytical, conceptual and problem-solving capabilities.
- Highly organised, reliable and detail-oriented.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong Microsoft Office proficiency, particularly in Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
