QUICK ANSWER |
Training should solve a work problem
A certificate can show participation, but the business needs a change in capability or behaviour. Before approving training, a manager should be able to complete this sentence: “After the training, the employee should be able to…”
The five-step WORK plan
W — Write the work outcome
Describe the required task and standard. Example: prepare an accurate monthly report by the agreed deadline.
O — Observe the present gap
Use work samples, customer feedback, error patterns, supervision notes or process results. Separate a skill gap from unclear instructions, missing tools or poor accountability.
R — Route the employee to the right method
A short demonstration, coaching session, job aid, supervised practice or formal course may solve different problems. Use the least complicated method that can close the gap safely.
K — Keep checking workplace use
Agree what evidence will show transfer: a completed task, fewer corrections, faster cycle time, safer work or stronger compliance. Review after the employee has had a fair chance to practise.

Practical coaching connects learning directly to the employee’s real work.

Frequently asked questions
Is formal training always necessary?
No. Some gaps can be closed through clear instructions, a job aid, demonstration or coaching. Formal training is useful when the capability needs structured learning and practice.
Should training be used for misconduct?
Not automatically. First establish whether the problem is knowledge, skill, tools, expectations, performance or conduct. Use a fair HR process for the actual issue.
