The first goal of professional networking is a useful connection, not an immediate referral.
Make your profile explain the context
Before approaching someone, check that your headline and About section make your direction understandable. State your real experience and interests. Someone should not need to interrogate you to work out why the conversation might be relevant.
LinkedIn’s profile guidance supports explaining your professional skills and direction. The seven-day plan below is HumanValue’s original practice framework, not a promise about the platform’s algorithm or a response rate.
Use the first three days to understand the field
- Day one: choose one professional area and identify a small set of people or organisations whose public work is relevant.
- Day two: read their recent public posts or publications. Write down one genuine observation or question.
- Day three: contribute a thoughtful comment where you have something useful to add. Do not pretend to be an expert in work you have not done.
Specificity matters more than flattery. “Your example of reconciling delivery exceptions made me review my own tracker” is more meaningful than a copied paragraph of praise.
Make one respectful approach
On days four and five, consider a brief connection request or message if appropriate. Explain the common context and ask one focused, low-pressure question. Avoid attaching an unsolicited CV or requesting a job, referral and mentoring call in the same message.
Illustrative wording: “I’m developing my skills in procurement operations and found your public discussion of supplier communication useful. What would you suggest a graduate practise first?” Respect a non-response. Do not send repeated reminders or move to a person’s private number without an invitation.
Follow through before asking for more
On days six and seven, act on any useful guidance and record what you learned. If someone replies, thank them and keep the conversation proportionate. If no one replies, improve the relevance of your approach rather than increasing the volume indiscriminately.
Professional relationships develop through consistent, useful interactions. Your profile, work samples and conduct should support the same credible story over time.
