If your application tracker only counts submissions, it may be recording effort without guiding your decisions.
Track the stages you can actually observe
Record the employer, role, source link, deadline, submission date, CV version, current stage and next action. Use factual labels: submitted, acknowledged, screening call, interview, decision or closed. Do not interpret every silence as a confirmed rejection.
Keep the tracker private and avoid collecting unnecessary personal information about recruiters or other applicants. The purpose is to manage your own search, not to build an informal database of strangers.
Review patterns without inventing causes
If several applications receive no response, possible explanations include role fit, competition, timing, application quality or an employer’s process. A small personal sample cannot tell you which explanation is correct.
Instead of declaring that “the system rejects my CV”, pick one thing you can inspect: did you meet the stated requirements, use the requested submission method and provide a relevant example? Make an informed improvement and record it.
Ask four questions each week
- Which opportunities were genuinely suitable, and which were speculative?
- What evidence did my strongest application contain?
- What repeated requirement points to a skill or project I should build?
- What is my next specific action for each active opportunity?
A next action might be preparing for a screening call, checking the official vacancy page, completing a permitted follow-up or setting aside a role that does not fit. It should not always be “send more applications”.
Run one deliberate experiment
Choose a role family for the following week, improve the relevant CV section and prepare one clearer work example. Do not change everything at once if you want to learn what made the application more coherent.
This is an original organisation method, not a guaranteed interview formula. A better review should help you use your effort more deliberately, manage deadlines and notice where you need support. That is progress even before a hiring decision arrives.
